Dental Implants vs. Bridges: Which Is Right for You?

Dentist reviewing a treatment plan with a patient

When you're missing a tooth, two of the best replacement options are a dental implant and a dental bridge. Both restore your smile and your bite — but they work very differently, and the right choice depends on your mouth and your priorities.

What is a dental implant?

An implant is a small titanium post that's placed in the jawbone to act like a natural tooth root. Once it heals, we attach a custom crown on top. Because the post integrates with your bone, an implant is the closest thing modern dentistry has to a natural tooth — it stands on its own without relying on neighboring teeth.

What is a dental bridge?

A bridge "bridges" the gap by anchoring a replacement tooth to the two teeth on either side. Those neighboring teeth are shaped to hold crowns that support the false tooth in the middle. It's a time-tested, non-surgical option that can often be completed in just a couple of visits.

How they compare

  • Longevity: Implants can last decades — often a lifetime — while bridges typically need replacing every 10–15 years.
  • Bone health: Implants stimulate the jawbone and help prevent the bone loss that follows a missing tooth. Bridges don't.
  • Neighboring teeth: A bridge requires reshaping the adjacent teeth; an implant leaves them untouched.
  • Care: Both are easy to maintain, but you can floss around an implant just like a natural tooth.
  • Time & cost: Bridges are usually faster and lower upfront cost; implants take longer but often cost less over time thanks to their durability.

The short version

If long-term durability and protecting your jawbone are top priorities — and you're a good candidate — implants are usually the gold standard. If you'd prefer a faster, non-surgical solution, a bridge can be an excellent choice. We'll help you weigh both.

Which is right for you?

The best option depends on your bone health, the condition of the neighboring teeth, your timeline, and your budget. During a consultation we take a careful look, explain what we see in plain language, and give you an honest recommendation — never a hard sell.

The goal isn't just to fill a gap — it's to restore your bite, your confidence, and your long-term health.

Replacing a missing tooth sooner rather than later helps protect the rest of your smile. If you're weighing your options, we'd be glad to talk it through.
